Ridiculum Diligenta: Ridiculous Persistence

Pledge

Fear not truth nor its agents.

It may be brutal, and it may be painful, but always truth shall be preferred to lies and ignorance.

I am an agent of truth. I am a purveyor of logic.

I am a Ferret of Truth, and I will wear away your self-deceiving, miss-construed views of the world, and give you a glimpse of truth!

The truth will set you free.

Mission

The Ferret of Truth is an award given to those who show ridiculous persistence in the erasure of ignorance. This badge of honor signifies that the recipient has taken great strides to educate the ignorant about all manner of topics, both mundane and arcane, both certain and controversial, about which people spew forth piles of ill-informed opinions. Ferrets of Truth strive to bring to light the facts and present them in an unbiased fashion so that these people may build well-informed opinions and arguments. These well-informed arguments serve a double purpose. First, they are more intelligent arguments and opinions, and are thus more likely to be taken seriously. Second, as well-informed opinions, more people will likely be persuaded by them. It is not the goal of the Ferrets of Truth to decry one opinion or argument as better or worse than another, nor to force others to accept certain views. The Ferrets of Truth only strive to help people make these opinions and arguments better so the Ferrets of Truth can once again feel proud to be members of the human race.

The motto Ridiculum Diligenta is Latin for "Ridiculous Persistence" or "Ridiculous Diligence", which is the attitude with which a Ferret of Truth should assault ignorance.

The maroon field of badge's center is the color symbolizing patience in battle and thus persistence.

The red of the banner is the color symbolizing a warrior, which a Ferret of Truth is.

The purple across the top is the color symbolizing sovereignty and justice, which are traits that Ferrets of Truth should admire.

The gold in the borders is the color symbolizing elevation of the mind and thus the education of the ignorant.

The ferret has no established heraldric symbolism that we have found, so now is the time to establish the ferret as a symbol of the battle against ignorance.

This badge was designed by [Falx].

2005-09-02 [Falx]: Hehehe... Jerret the Ferret... AKA: The Ferret of Truth! Ha!

2005-09-02 [Rondel]: May I nominate a wiki for this award? I think that there are previous recipients of this honour who will attest to my credentials in doing so... *looks pointedly at [Delladreing]*

2005-09-02 [itoe]: Feel free to point us in the direction of worthy wikis and people. Can't have us missing any, now can we?

2005-09-04 [Rondel]: I just thought that you folks might want to take a look at Not Alone and Sexuality and Gender -- the latter isn't highly trafficked yet, because it isn't fully finished, but it's already laying out some basic and seriously important facts, which a lot of the members of this site are likely to be misinformed about. Oh, and while we're on the subject, check out the bio of the guy who runs that latter wiki: [BarleySinger]. I've seen a lot of positive responses to the stuff he has to say in his bio, there are some pretty basic and important messages there.

2005-09-04 [Falx]: Thanks [Rondel]! We will definitely gove them a look.

2005-09-09 [Delladreing]: I think [Rondel]'s nomination is a good one, I've spent quite a while looking over the wikis, and they are highly informative and present one of the most unbias writings on these particular issues which I have come accross. i don't know how many wikis I have come accross on the subjects that have "aNd iF u gt a problem with dis den FUKC U!!" which on the whole only makes me want to smite them all for essentially hammering the first nail into their own coffin. they have my vote.

2005-09-10 [Falx]: I've read over both pages and I think you are both right. I think these pages need some ferrets!

2005-09-10 [Delladreing]: huzzah!

2005-09-10 [Rondel]: Wonderful! I think it will be a good thing for [Zauberin], who runs Not Alone -- it helps people to know that their efforts are reaching people, and being appreciated.

2005-09-10 [Falx]: So, I have a question... What exactly happened to the wiccaz wing page? I saw it was destroyed, but how?

2005-09-10 [Delladreing]: the person acting as owner just destroyed it i believe

2005-09-10 [Falx]: Um... ok. Not that it really had anything to do with wicca and/or wiccans any way.

2005-09-10 [Delladreing]: i know, it was supposedly meant to, but no it didnt.

2005-09-11 [Delladreing]: and I'd like to nominate [Rondel] for the ferret of truth, her existance in itself is helping to battle the stupidity in the world, shes a regular on my Playgans (educating the masses has never been easier let me tell you) and she has a a wider range of knowledge than half of eltown put together. theres a lot more things i could say right now but im about to get dragged out the door by a sulky friend >.<

2005-09-11 [Rondel]: Umm... wow! Thank you! Not to be cliche, but I consider it an honour even to be nominated. :)

2005-09-11 [Falx]: Well, I certainly second the nomination

2005-09-11 [Delladreing]: here here!

2005-09-13 [itoe]: And it shall be done. Though, it's taking me way too long to get around to this... I appoint [Falx] to keep me reminded and focused.

2005-09-14 [itoe]: I'm going to dissent in the case of Not Alone. I find the message there an important one, and I strongly urge people to support it. It needs recognition, but a Ferret is not the way to do so. The primary purpose of Not Alone right now is supportive and not informative. It is the informative effort that the Ferret is designed to recognize. Yes, it is serious and unbiased. Yes, it has a nice resources section providing links to good information, but the primary mission of the wiki is still support.

2005-09-14 [Delladreing]: maybe there should be another badge thingye like the ferret in association, like the ferret of truth supporst this wiki with the *random animal name* badge

2005-09-14 [itoe]: Now that idea, I like. What animal should we use? Now taking suggestions.

2005-09-14 [Delladreing]: a fish of some kind, for those who dare to swim agaisnt the flowing tides of idiocy and so on...i know its not very good, i apologise, im sleep deprived by an number of 24+ hours now x.x

2005-09-14 [itoe]: As for swimming againt currents, the salmon is the logical choice, as they swim upstream and have been know to swim up waterfalls and dams to return to their spawning grounds.

2005-09-15 [Delladreing]: thats what i was trying to go for hehe thank you, i forgot the name of the fish >.<

2005-09-15 [Rondel]: First of all, thank you for awarding me the Ferret of Truth, and I intend to continue to do my best to live up to its standards. :) As for the support group badge ideas, I can see merit in the suggestion of the salmon, for swimming against the flow, against all odds... On the other hand, while a mammal and not a fish, the dolphin has been known to rescue shipwreck victims and keep them afloat, offering support not only to their own kind, but to other species in need. :) *retires to give the matter further thought*

2005-09-15 [itoe]: hrm.... I like the dolphin suggestion, too.

2005-09-15 [Delladreing]: i like it, but i think the salmon is more random. like the ferret. but heh now i like both ideas and cant decide whihc one i like best >.<

2005-09-15 [Rondel]: There's also the advantage, with the dolphin, that the ferret is less likely to eat i., should the same person receive both awards. LOL :D Of course, in those who inspire others to educational efforts, that would mean that they need to be given an award which reflects that which most inspires ferrets -- in my experience, that would be the smell of feet. My oldest friend's ferrets used to steal my dirty socks and hide them in little tunnels under the foldout couch, when I came to visit. LOL I can see it now -- "For bringing out the best in others, and inspiring their educational efforts, you have been awarded The Smelly Sock of Inspiration!" *giggles* Okay, it's official, sleep time.

2005-09-15 [Delladreing]: LOL! theres a way of looking at it.

2005-09-15 [itoe]: The Smelly Sock is a... um... well... it's humorous anyway. I don't imagine it would go over that well with its recipients, though ;-).

2005-09-15 [Delladreing]: lol no i dont think so >.>

2005-09-16 [Falx]: I like the dolphin and the salmon ideas.

2005-09-16 [itoe]: Ya know, [Falx], I was hoping that when you weighed in on the issue, you have a preference... Oh well. We may just need to have a poll, or perhaps we can put both to use.

2005-09-16 [Delladreing]: id say we could put both to use..maybe come up with a cross breed. a "salphin" lol

2005-09-16 [itoe]: Much better than the alternative "dolmon"

2005-09-16 [Delladreing]: lol true

2005-09-17 [Rondel]: Maybe the salmon of determined independence and self-sacrifice to one's goals (since the salmon swims upstream to lay its eggs, and fertilizes the area with its own rotting corpse, in the ultimate act of self-sacrifice, when it has done so...), and the dolphin of determined support, not only for one's own kind, but for all in need? So the salmon would be for bucking the trends to do what is most beneficial to others than oneself, while the dolphin would be for support, intelligence, a sense of humour, and the ability to form bonds across (and despite) differences. I dunno, what do y'all think? For instance, [Zauberin] (founder of Not Alone) would be a good example of a salmon <MORE>

2005-09-17 [Rondel]: for helping others, particularly younger bisexual and lesbian girls/women, going against societal trends and giving of herself... ...while in the same context (Not Alone), [BarleySinger], a VERY straight man, would be a good example of a dolphin -- helping those who are different from himself, regardless of their differences, but with humour, intelligence, and respect. I don't mean to harp on these two people, they just struck me as good examples of the difference between the two concepts, as I see it. :)

2005-10-09 [Delladreing]: I am tempted to make the "Salphin" badge lol, just because I now know so many people who deserve it at this very moment

2005-10-09 [Falx]: I like the Salphin idea. I'm just not really sure what one would look like, ya know?

2005-10-10 [Delladreing]: Indeed....hmm

2005-10-10 [Rondel]: A leaping dolphin sillouhette with full breeding season sockeye salmon colouration, a hook on the end of its beak, and some indication of scales? *shrugs* Just a thought...

2005-10-10 [Delladreing]: ...most definately beyond my skills lol

2005-10-11 [itoe]: And mine. I wouldn't even know where or how to start with that. I like the idea though. ^_^

2005-10-11 [Delladreing]: *nod nod* hrmmm i'm going to go harass my art friends :D

2005-10-11 [itoe]: Now that sounds like a plan! I have some I can harass m'self.

2005-10-12 [Delladreing]: *noddles* meh, they all logged off, im going to look like major stalker with messages XD

2007-02-06 [Falx]: I'd like to nominate [deus-ex-machina] for his dedication to the education of the ignorant at Theological Discussions. Do I have a second?

2007-02-13 [Falx]: If no one has any objections then, I'm going to go ahead and send him the badge.

2007-02-17 [Rondel]: I haven't been following that wiki long enough to give a truly informed opinion, but what I saw of that wiki made a positive impression -- I'll go ahead and second the motion, I suppose. I'm certainly not opposed to it. :)

2007-02-17 [Falx]: Cool. Then I'll send it on over to Deus.

2007-02-17 [Delladreing]: Deus deserves it because deus is awesome. End of :D

2007-02-17 [Falx]: Agreed.^_^
